When and How to Use Dry Shampoo

Updated: Sep 17

Dry shampoo is one of those products that seems like it would be a total game-changer, but can also be a little bit confusing and intimidating to use. So, when and how should you use dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo is most commonly used to extend the life of a blowout, but it can also be used to refresh second-day hair, give volume to limp hair, and absorb oil and sweat on hot days. Basically, if your hair could use a little pick-me-up, dry shampoo is a good option.

Here are some great tips from your RondezVous Colour Lounge hair stylists to help you figure out when to use dry shampoo, and we’ll also answer some common questions to help you get the most out of this hair care staple.

How to use dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo is a great way to refresh your hair in between shampoos. But, if you've never used it before, the process can seem a bit daunting. We’ve definitely seen our share of greasy Sudbury hair, so here's a step-by-step guide on how to use dry shampoo so you can get the most out of this handy hair product: 1. Start with dry hair. Dry shampoo works best on second or third-day hair that's starting to look oily or greasy. 2. Shake the bottle of dry shampoo well before use. This will help distribute the product evenly. 3. Section your hair off and hold the bottle about six inches away from your head. Spray the roots of your hair in short bursts until they're coated with a light layer of dry shampoo. 4. Use your fingers to work the dry shampoo into your roots, massaging it in for about 30 seconds to absorb any excess oil. 5. Brush your hair out thoroughly with a paddle brush or wide-tooth comb to distribute the product evenly and style as desired

Do you use dry shampoo before or after showering?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, it is simply a matter of personal preference. Most people like to use dry shampoo before showering in order to absorb excess oil and build-up from their scalp between shampoos. As mentioned above, it should be used on dry hair.

Others however prefer to use dry shampoo after showering and shampooing. Once your hair is dry, it can be used as a preventative measure to create a barrier to grease before it begins. This can work particularly well on finer hair that tends to get oilier more quickly. The dry shampoo can also help to add volume and texture to the hair. Whichever way you choose to use dry shampoo, make sure that you shake the bottle well before use, and target the roots of your hair for best results. This will help you get the best looking hair in Sudbury every time!

Do you use dry shampoo on clean or dirty hair?

Dry shampoo is a great product to use when you don't have time to wash your hair. It can be used on clean or dirty hair, but it works best on hair that is slightly dirty. If your hair is very greasy, you may want to wash it first, then dry your hair, and then use dry shampoo. Sometimes using it in a preventative way rather than a cure for oily hair is best!

Do you use dry shampoo in the morning or at night?

Dry shampoo can be used in the morning or at night, depending on when you need it. If your hair is feeling greasy or oily, dry shampoo can help absorb some of the excess oil and give your hair a fresh, clean feel. It's important to choose the right dry shampoo for your hair type and to use it sparingly, as too much can leave your hair feeling heavy and looking dull.

Our Sudbury hair stylists use and highly recommend Redken’s Deep Clean Dry Shampoo. It provides maximal oil absorption for all hair types, leaving your hair looking and feeling clean. It’s made without sulfate or silicone. You simply hold the product 6-8 inches away from your hair, spray onto the oiliest parts of your hair at the root and throughout hair. Brush the product through for a fresh, clean feel and to work through and remove any residue.
